En mi casa siempre se ha inculcado la lectura y ha estado presente en cada etapa de mi vida. A veces leía más, a veces leía menos, pero lo cierto es que siempre leía (leo). Nadie me ha dicho qué libro comprar, he tenido la oportunidad de poder confiar en mi instinto y elegir las lecturas que más me apetecían. La mayoría de ellas, por no decir todas, pertenecen a la categoría juvenil.
¿Y por qué dejar de hacerlo cuando ya has sobrepasado los dieciocho? Muchas personas aseguran que hay que leer “literatura adulta” y lo único que yo me he preguntado siempre es: ¿qué demonios significa eso? ¿Qué es lo que tiene la literatura adulta que no tenga la literatura juvenil?
Dejadme que sea sincera: ha caído poca literatura que se considera de adulto en mis manos. Sí, he leído algunos clásicos: Mujercitas, Frankestein, Drácula, Nuestra Señora de París, Orgullo y prejuicio… Y con ellos solo he llegado a la conclusión de que no hay mucha diferencia entre esta división.
No logro entender por qué hay tanto odio hacia esta clase de libros. No entiendo por qué se cree que son de peor calidad cuando hablan de tantos temas interesantes y distintos y todos desde un punto de vista único y especial. Quizás es eso lo que les molesta. Quizás ni siquiera saben de qué se habla en estas novelas y juzgan sin siquiera abrir un libro para descubrirlo.
Recuerdo que hace un par de años, en una charla de la Freakcon de Málaga, una mujer alzó la mano para hacer una pregunta y se presentó asegurando que leía juvenil y que no se avergonzaba de ello. ¿Por qué deberíamos estarlo? ¿Por qué deberíamos decir con la boca pequeña que leemos, escribimos literatura juvenil? Pienso que los jóvenes son las personas que cambian el futuro por el simple hecho de que se harán adultos y tomarán el relevo de los actuales adultos.
Nuestros bisabuelos no entendían a nuestros abuelos; nuestros abuelos no entendían a nuestros padres; muchas veces nuestros padres no nos entienden a nosotros, así ha sido toda la vida y así será. Queremos y necesitamos jóvenes que se preocupen por los demás y se atrevan a hablar de los temas que le preocupan. ¿Qué más da que no lo entiendas? ¿Qué más da que no lea lo que tú crees que deberían leer? ¿Y si en vez de quejaros decidís abrir un libro e intentáis entenderlos, ver por qué nos enamora tanto esa literatura y, si os apetece, recomendarnos clásicos que se adapten a lo que queremos leer en ese instante?
La pregunta no es por qué leer literatura juvenil habiendo pasado la veintena, la verdadera pregunta es: ¿y por qué no?

A eso yo le añadiría un cierto elitismo cultural; es decir, siempre pensamos que algo sencillo o «de masas» es automáticamente malo, que cuanto más complejo o más de culto mejor es. Por ejemplo, siempre se va a mirar con admiración a alguien a quien le gusta la música clásica (aunque a ti te aburra soberanamente), mientras que a alguien que solo escucha pop comercial se le considera básico y simplón.
Dicho todo esto, aunque yo trabajo con adolescentes y a veces llego a pensar que son idiotas o que tienen los gustos en el orto (por no decir una palabra más fea), a mí me encanta la literatura juvenil. Es más, creo que algunas obras (tanto literarias como audiovisuales) que están destinadas a un público infantil o juvenil se pueden disfrutar incluso más en la edad adulta.
