El pincel recorrió el lienzo con extrema delicadeza mientras que, de fondo, se escuchaba el incómodo silencio que reinaba en la sala. La luz se filtraba por aquel enorme ventanal. Ésta reflejaba el estupendo jardín que poseía la majestuosa residencia de los reyes.
El encargo era sencillo, demasiado para alguien con su capacidad artística. La princesa posaba de una forma tan errática que el cuadro sería un auténtico manchurrón en su impecable carrera. La atenta mirada de los reyes no ayudaba a que la joven destensara la mandíbula o los brazos.
—¿Podrían… —se atrevió a hablar aún sabiendo las consecuencias—… podrían, sus majestades reales, dejarnos a solas?
—¿Disculpa? —La reina se llevó la mano al pecho como si le hubiese propuesto pintar un desnudo—. Mi hija está prometida, mi buen señor. Haga lo que se le ordene que para eso le contratamos.
«Por menos de lo que me gustaría» pensó el pintor al recordar la nefasta negociación sobre su salario. Se mordió la lengua y trató de reconducir la conversación.
—Quiero que la princesa esté tranquila. Quiero que el pueblo la vea como una persona cercana.
—No lo es —aclaró el rey mientras se arreglaba la manga de su camisa.
—Vuestros cuadros son en privado. ¿Por qué el mío no? —rebatió la princesa, aunque volvió a poner la pose en cuestión de segundos mientras murmuraba una leve disculpa. El pintor sonrió.
Tras varios intercambios verbales en los que prefirió no intervenir, los reyes se marcharon con la cabeza bien alta. Se quedaron solos y ambos respiraron con tranquilidad. Rieron y sus melodías se entrelazaron en el aire y rebotaron contra las paredes, dándole un nuevo color a la estancia que poseía un tono grisáceo.
—¿Cuántos años tiene? —Fue ella quien habló, como si hubiera esperado ese momento con ansias—. Perdón, vuelvo a mi posición.
—Veinticinco —dijo sin poder ocultar su expresión divertida. Sin embargo, no olvidaba que era un profesional trabajando—. ¿Cómo quiere ser representada?
La joven hizo girar la falda de su vestido mientras miraba el estampado.
—Quiero que sea algo magnífico y nunca antes visto. Estoy cansada de los mismos cuadros reales.
—Los retratos son representaciones de la persona —explicó mientras jugueteaba con el pincel—. Los objetos que se integran en el fondo no están colocados al azar.
—Lo sé. He visto su trabajo y estoy encantada con él. —Se sentó en el suelo o al menos lo intentó. Su vestido no dejaba que lo hiciera. Volvió a incorporarse y fue dando vueltas sobre sí misma por la habitación. Levantaba los brazos y los bajaba al compás de una música que él no era capaz de escuchar.
Los halagos siempre habían sido una incomodidad para el pintor. Los que observaban sus cuadros se quedaban en la superficie, en lo estético. Nadie miraba más allá. Ella, sin embargo, parecía que sí lo había conseguido.
—¿Qué es lo que más desea, princesa? —preguntó, con un leve nudo en la garganta. En los anhelos y sueños se podía entrever la personalidad de alguien.
La joven se detuvo y le miró a los ojos. Por un segundo, creyó que ella se adentraba en su alma y la descubría al completo. Sacudió la cabeza para descartar aquella escalofriante idea.
—Quiero estar presente cuando pintaron a mis padres.
Él abrió los ojos al escuchar su deseo, pero pronto lo entendió y su cuerpo se relajó. Casi sin darse cuenta, ya estaba trabajando, imaginaba diferentes escenarios, colores luces… Por primera vez desde que había aceptado el encargo, se sentía ilusionado.
—¿Qué suele hacer cuando los reyes no están?
—Estoy todo el día con mis criadas. Ellas me cuidan y se aseguran de que no me falta de nada. También juego con Margarita, mi perra.
—¿Puede traerlas?
—¿Para que salgan en el cuadro? —Al principio pensó que iba a rechazar su propuesta. La realeza solía ser muy rígida en ese aspecto. Los cuadros eran retratos de ellos y de nadie más. Algún atrezo, pero que no distrajera al pueblo—. Claro, las llamo en seguida.
En menos de un minuto, la sala se llenó de doncellas que atendían a la princesa y todas parecían emocionadas ante la idea de salir en un retrato. Hasta Margarita movía el rabo con alegría. Las jóvenes se peinaban y acicalaban entre ellas, con risas que amenizaban el ambiente. El pintor dejó escapar una sonrisa. Una de las cosas que le gustaba de su trabajo era contemplar la naturalidad de las personas. Después quedarían retratadas con una pose impuesta, pero él buscaba que fuera lo más cercana a la realidad posible. Era la única forma en la que tenía de capturar un recuerdo que se quedaba grabado en su mente.
Un par de semanas hicieron falta para que pudiera contemplar el cuadro. El vínculo que se creó entre las muchachas y el pintor sería difícil de romper y, sin embargo, él estaba seguro de que, en cuanto saliese por aquellas puertas, no volverían a verse jamás.
Aun así, se atrevió a dar aquella última pincelada antes de dar un par de pasos hacia atrás y mirar su gran obra maestra. No hizo falta que articulara palabra para que las mujeres supieran que había acabado. La princesa fue la primera en acercarse, se le agarró al cuello dando un pequeño salto y contempló lo que había hecho.

Las horas delante del retrato de los reyes para imitar sus facciones fueron productivas, aunque sólo salieran en un simple reflejo. Quería que todo fuese perfecto.
—¿Te gusta? —La miró para descubrir que no estaba demasiado segura. Veía que había torcido la boca y que las cejas se fruncían unos centímetros. Algo no iba bien—. ¿Qué pasa? ¿No estás contenta?
—No, no es eso. Me encanta, pero… —la maldita palabra que mataba a cualquier artista— falta algo.
La chica le contempló, con esos ojos capaces de traspasar su alma, y él supo que no había nada de malo en su obra, que simplemente ella había captado la esencia y quería añadirle un detalle más.
—¿El qué?
—Faltas tú.
